Chesham Museum

Having stumbled upon Chesham’s very own museum, in preparation for its re-launch, it proved too good a before-and-after Tale to pass up. Chesham Tales is now even a member. Couldn’t resist. So, about the museum:

Remarkably, it was originally housed within a local pub. The kindly inn keeper, Shay Comaskey of the Gamekeeper’s Lodge gave his support and vision, encouraging the museum to flourish and grow. Curious locals were enticed into the pub’s stables by artefacts from the second world war. Today, Chesham Museum is nestled between the charming 17th Century shop fronts, at 15 Market Square. Now running under the care of its passionate volunteers, with support from local businesses, schools and of course, local dwellers themselves, the museum is becoming well established.

The re-launch has inspired a carefully designed installation, featuring lovely vignettes of Chesham’s history. Surrounding the collection are timelines on the walls, stretching way back to Roman times and earlier, taking you through the many ages of Chesham. There’s a seriously ancient section of a floor mosaic, accompanied by a delightful model of how it would have looked in its original state. The town’s plenteous past is mostly known for the ‘four Bs’ – Boots, Baptists, Brushes and Beer. In fact, if you have a natural bristled brush in your possession, chances still are it was made right here. In Chesham. Today. So come and take a glimpse into an antique Tale, with mad hatters, old teddies and local ale….
