Chesham Brewery Shop

Come and meet Tim. You’ll find him in the Chesham Brewery Shop – one of Chesham’s most popular recently installed establishments. Tim manages the store, selling the 120-150 different beverages, including hand crafted cask ales, sour beers, lagers and ciders, some of which are brewed in the award-winning Red Squirrel Brewery, in nearby Potten End. They also stock a considered selection of really decent wine.

Tim’s background in Fine Art (he hit a 2:1 at Reading Uni) is evident in the simple and eye catching promotional materials and posters. Tim initially got into the beer business through Reading Beer Festival, where his curiosity became his interest, his obsession and ultimately his career.  He started out as a volunteer at another brewery, where he was paid in beer. He then learned about the Red Squirrel, emailed them looking for work, obviously said the right thing, and the rest is history. Tim tells how their customers now range from fledgling beer drinkers in their early twenties, to the more seasoned tipplers, well into their eighties. There’s evidently something for everyone then.

Business partners Greg and Jason, responsible for the brewery and shop, are both local dwellers, so know Chesham and recognise its current growth and potential. The perfect storm led to the opportunity for them to open up on their doorstep and the result is fast becoming the envy of surrounding towns. The shop itself features a utilitarian, stylish interior, which is welcoming and clean. At the tasting bar, the tap wall provides an aesthetic backdrop to your drink and socialising and, perhaps because there’s no TV interrupting your thoughts, it’s one of those places where you’ll strike up conversation with locals you’ve never met, as well as those with a familiar face.

Chesham Tales was honoured to be invited into the newly modernised Red Squirrel micro-brewery, to see from where the local ales hail. The brewery is impressive, with its super high tech, antimicrobial red-resin floor and huge, stainless steel drums and hoppers, regulated with sophisticated temperature controls. This is also employed in the shop stores, so the beer is still perfect by the time it reaches your pint glass. Or your milk carton to take home.

Become a member (just £50 a year) and amongst other perks, you too can go on a brewery tour as well as enjoying discounted ale prices. The shop is open for purchasing and/or tasting: Mon-Thurs12-8pm, 12-9pm Friday, 10-9pm Saturday, and 2-6pm Sunday.

The Red Squirrel = conscious drinking. A percentage of every pint you buy supports the protection of Britain’s dwindling Red Squirrel population http://rsst.org.uk/

Visit the Chesham Brewery Shop in Market Square (opposite Brazil’s) to see for yourself – you’ll wonder how we ever managed without it.
