Chesham’s Final ‘Will and Temperance’

A sad but joyful evening – the final Temperance Social Eating experience was last night, held once again within the atmospheric Temperance Hall in Old Chesham. Having sampled every Temperance installation so far, and even serving at one of them, Chesham Tales was hugely thankful to attend the final show.

This one was a particularly special event, with guest chef being none other than Grayshott Spa’s Executive Chef, Adam Palmer. Grayshott Spa is a prestigious, well established Surrey retreat, host to a number of well-heeled guests, so catering for high expectations. A bit like Chesham really. *cough*

So, in what has swiftly become tradition, first stop had to be Chesham Brewery Shop to stock up on a favourite tipple in the spirit of ‘bring your own’. Purchses made, us guests walked across the road to the hall, where we were welcomed into the warmth and tranquility of Temperance. We were then treated to the most exquisite 6 course dining experience, including two surprise dishes not listed on the menu. The focus was healthy eating – not a chunk of bread in sight – and by the end, we were full, but not stuffed. No gluttony here, just seriously good and healthy food. Chesham Tales tasted the meat menu, though vegetarians were also catered for.

As well as producing very happy customers, previous Temperance Social Eating nights, which started at the beginning of 2014, have attracted some criticism for the length of time waiting between courses. However, people need to remain conscious that this was a pop-up restaurant curated and delivered by three entrepreneurial people, who simply wanted to prove that Chesham needs good restaurants. Since this began, Chesham now features additional eateries that veer away from Chinese/Indian takeaway/Pizza joints. Not that there’s anything wrong with these, but variety is never a bad thing.

Well, the finale was super organised and precisely delivered, which should shut the moaning mouths of those who perhaps next time, will simply appreciate the experience.

Huge thanks to Peter, Lyn and Alistair for bringing this unique event to Chesham. Fingers crossed they’ll change their minds and do it again………
