Berko’s Brewery Shop

Berkhampstead/Berkhamsted/Berko – Chesham’s glamorous older sister is for once following in Chesham’s stead, welcoming the Red Squirrel Brewery into it’s clique. CT went along to the launch party, to wet the baby’s head and check out the new venue at 104, High Street, Berkhamsted.

The night was busy and the shop was packed with beer geeks, ale nerds and those who simply fancied a tipple or two with mates. Decorated for the occasion, all were made to feel welcome, home from home. There was a great atmosphere, full of anticipation and merriment for the new brew, with a backdrop of live music from from local musicians, Azure.

Positioned opposite the unique and marvellous Rex cinema, it’s perfectly located for a pre-film drink. Set in a beautiful old Victorian Mock Tudor building typical of Berkhamsted, it is larger than Chesham’s Brewery shop, boasting additional space upstairs, as well as outdoor seating areas.

The connoisseurs will not be disappointed with the range of locally crafted beers, ales and ciders on offer, as well as the tap tasting bar. Like Chesham, the shop also offers take-out options, with bespoke ‘Growlers’ available for transporting the precious liquid. Accompanying wine drinkers are not left by the wayside, with a small but perfectly formed selection available.

The industrial chic interior of Berko’s shop is well designed, comfortable yet sleek, having been thoughtfully pieced by Chesham designer, Mark Cowie, and superbly outfitted by Chesham carpenter, Jim Harrison. Overseen by Peter Wright, local entrepreneur of Temperance fame and c0-founder of BURYFields Festival it is, all in all, a locally crafted masterpiece that offers a stylish, relaxed afternoon/evening out, either by itself or as a prelim to further fun.
