Autentico Atelier at Jack and Atticus

Ok, it’s an Amersham Tale strictly speaking, but it’s only up the hill…. If you haven’t made the short trip to Jack and Atticus home emporium, stocked with vintage furniture, mirrors and an assortment of treasures, you really should.

As well as selling unique homeware, Jack and Atticus run courses in furniture painting so, piqued by a long held interest, Chesham Tales jumped firmly on this up-cycling band wagon, attending a group workshop under the guidance of the shop’s founder, Texan born Scott Broussard. Tucked away in an unexpected warehouse, the whole day was a wonderfully relaxed affair and, treated to cheese and wine, we were well looked after. The price of the workshop included the tables we painted, and which we were able to take home and keep.

In between each layer of paint, Scott demonstrated various techniques, showing us how to use glazes and waxes. We had free reign with the colours, testing out Autentico hues on our tables to practice what Scott had shown us. Chesham Tales attempts at being edgy and progressive failed somewhat, whilst the other students, Mary and Claire, managed to transform the previously drab tables into something you’d be proud to have in your house – “Oh, that old thing?…..”

Scotts own journey is an inspiring tale having left a secure, well paid job to follow his passions, despite it being a bit scary at first. Believe it or not, Scott used to sell dentist equipment. After building up a warehouse full of old furniture, his collection and skills grew to the point where, responding to requests, he opened his first shop in Amersham and ditched the dentistry world. He now sells quality condition second hand items, with stock gathered from local craftspeople, or simply from those de-cluttering their home. You can also commission a piece to be painted by Scott and his team.

Named after Scotts beloved dogs, ‘Jack and Atticus’ recently expanded to open a second shop. You can find the vintage emporiums either at 71 Woodside Road, Amersham or 55 North Street, Thame. Both are open Monday to Saturday and stock colours from the Autentico range. Be warned though, after attending a workshop, it’s possible that anything standing still in your house will fall victim to your paint brush.
