Schools of Chesham Carnival 2016

Written by Ben Brotherton.

Every year, Chesham primary schools prepare for the annual Schools Carnival, showing off themed creations, which have taken parents, teachers, friends and families hours of blood, sweat and tears to bring to life.

Saturday 11th June showcased the 2016 event and what a delight it was. Schools from across Chesham paraded some incredible designs, dressing up float lorries to the theme of ‘100 years of Roald Dahl’. Led by the Fire Service and Chesham All Girls Band, other local groups and services also took part, including Chesham Athletics Football Club, Chesham Stags and the local Air and Army Cadet forces.

The Carnival procession moves through central Chesham, starting from Asheridge Road, along Broad Street and on into the pedestrian area of the town, finally arriving at Watermeadow car park. Crowds throng, lining the route, perching on door steps and cheering each float as it comes into view. There is always a big turn out and this year was no disappointment and mercifully, the rain held off.

Seeing all the colourful homemade outfits was truly spectacular. The work and time that has gone into each little piece is so evident. A huge thanks to all the children, parents, teachers and helpers who make the carnival happen each year, and whose work does not go unnoticed!

From Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to The Enormous Crocodile, Roald Dahl novels were beautifully emulated, with scenes and characters recreated on the floats and walking processions.

After the parade, its off to Lowndes Park for more fun. With burgers and booze, bouncy castles and dancing, there’s a wide variety of local trade and entertainment represented. Some of the local firemen and women were there to help educate and explain what they do to children and adults alike. Chesham fire station is a reserve station and is always welcoming more volunteers for such a vital service.

Conveniently, the carnival falls at the same time as Trooping the Colour, so carnival goers are treated to a flyby of military aircraft and the Red Arrows, though the Arrows must have taken a wrong turn this year.

Events like the carnival show off the variety, talent and creativity alive and kicking in Chesham. So many take part from all parts of the community, it keeps the heart of Chesham alive and binds our wonderfully diverse demographic. It’s a little bit of magic… and ‘Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.’
